IN NFC Football over the weekend, the North Bay Bulldogs dropped a 21-12 decision on Saturday to the Sarnia Imperials. Their next game is August 7th at home to the Toronto Maddogs.
Two games in men's Premier Division Soccer yesterday, Davedi/Fox and Fiddle and Carte Blanche Young Guns tied 3-3l while CTS FC scored a 2-1 win over Powassan FC. In Second Division play, Titans FC defeated Metro FC 3-2 while Moore Propane beat Cor Maximus 4-1.
The Nipissing Lakers have a peak performance volleyball camp this week. It's for girls 14-18 and it's full. As well, the all skills volleyball camp is for boys and girls from August 9th to 13th and there are still 20 spots available. The North Bay Junior A Trappers have named their new captain. Team officials travelled to Calgary to deliver the "C" to returning defenceman Matt Weisensel recently. He says he saw himself as a leader last year and feels he'll own this and help his team mates be the best they can be this season.
North Bay's Glenn Cundari is spending this year as president of the CPGA. Part of his job dictates that he gets to go to all the major sites and this year that includes Augusta National for the Masters, Pebble Beach for the U.S. Open and St Andrews for the British Open. Cundari says there's so much history at St Andrews, the home of golf. He says his living is golf and its surreal the game started there. Cundari also says Louis Oosthuizen's win proves how global the game is.
Kevin Dugas is this years Kiwanis Club of North Bay hole in one competition winner. He now moves on to an international event in Whistler.
Several local weightlifters took part in a recent competition in the Toronto area. Bronwynn Shepherd of the Valkyries won in the under 48 kilogram division. Courtney Simkins was 2nd in the 63 kilo. Local Kayla Turner formerly of the Valkyries and now for the University of Toronto won in the 69 kilo. On the male side, Jake Staples of the North Bay Norsemen was 2nd in the 56 kilo and Kempton Morris was 2nd in the 62 kilo division.
Pascal Paquette is this years champion of the Pinewood Park golf course's junior open. He carded a 58 in the event.
The Nipissing Lakers continue to prepare for next season. They have recruited former ohl rearguard Paul Cianfrini. He played his career with Erie and Belleville. Cianfrini is six feet tall and weighs 210 pounds.
This years ladies invitational champ at the North Bay Golf and Country club is Melanie Lamarche of Sudbury. Her 2 day total of 162 was seven strokes better than Carolyn Morland. Defending champ Barb Wellard was third.
A member of North Bay's CT-33 Swim Club, Zeyana Laplante captured gold in the 50m backstroke event at Ontario Swim championships in Ottawa .Her time set a new club record and joins a growing list of champion backstroke swimmers from North Bay including Dominique Bouchard and Jaydan Jackson.
In the Nipissing District adult soccer league, 2nd division action saw Seal Guard FC and Moore Propane tied 2-2
Quite a performance for Sundridge's Megan D'allaire aboard Casper at the summer trillium show at Knowlton Ridge. They earned two firsts and a third in the hack division and two firsts and a 2nd in the hunter division. That means she was named the grand champion in the hunter division and beat 17 other competitors.
The Gateway Volleyball Camp is all set for later this summer. A setters camp goes August 23rd, 24th and 26th while the weeklong volleyball camp goes from the 24th to 28th. Skills being taught to a host of age groups include forearm passing, volleying, blocking, spiking, team play, stations and more. The cost is 70 dollars and registration forms are available at Gateway Physiotherapy.
The North Bay Sea Cadet has been named to the Ontario Sailing Team. The Central Sea Cadets Regatta was held recently in Kingston Harbour, with Jefferey Ali one of the ten Royal Canadian Sea Cadets named to the Central Region Sailing Team. The team will now compete in the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets National Regatta in Kingston from August 23rd to the 27th.
Claude Noel has been named the new head coach of the AHL's Manitoba Moose. The former North Bay Trappers Centennials coach joins the Moose after three seasons as an assistant with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Noel was also named interim head coach in Columbus this past season after Ken Hitchcock was fired February. 3. Noel was born in Kirkland Lake.
The North Bay Thunderbirds Swim club have handed out their year end awards. Among the winners are Jacob Brost and Michael Denomme for Top First Year Swimmer, Jayden Jackson for Top Swimmer, Dylan Jackson for Top Male Athlete and Sierra McCourt for Top Female Athlete. Meanwhile, at a recent meet in Sudbury Jayden Jackson received the Fred Rams NEOR Swimmer of the Year award for top female swimmer in the North-Eastern Ontario Region.
Corpus Christi won this years Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District school board's junior 3 pitch baseball tournament. They edged Powasson's St Gregory 3-2 in the final.
