In the NOJHL, the North Bay Junior A Trappers and Sudbury Junior Wolves are now tied at a game apiece in their best of 7 quarterfinal series. This after a marathon game ended at 17:09 in the third overtime period, with Sudbury winning 2-1. Game 3 goes Thursday night in North Bay. Game time at Memorial Gardens is 7pm.
Widdifield is the NOSSA "AAA" boys hockey champions. This after a 2-1 win over St Basil from the Soo in the final. The Wildcats next play in the OFSAA tourney later this month in St Catherines.
SJSH is heading to the OFSAA "AAA" girls hockey tournament later this month. This after they won the NOSSA title in Sudbury Wednesday. The Lady Bears, who won all three round robin games, scored a 6-1 win over Widdifield in the final.
At the OFSAA "A" boys basketball tourney in Sturgeon Falls, the Algonquin Barons lost the consolation final. A team from Collingwood won the game 63-58.
some local members of the North Bay freestyle skiing team recently competed in moguls events at the Ontario Winter games and the provincial championships. Of note: Zach Pecore finished 4th in the games and 6th in the provincials while his twin brother Rory placed 9th and 15th in the same events.
It's a chance to learn more about lacrosse and build skills for the sport. A Lakers Lacrosse Skills Camp for youth is being put on in April and it's tied in with the start-up of the new youth lacrosse league. Lakers defenceman John Quarrie played with the current Canadian Jr A Lacrosse Champions and is also a Toronto Rock draft pick. He's putting on the camp for youth ages five and up -- and it's open to all skill levels. For more details you can contact the Laker's office at 478-6634.
Widdifield wrapped up round robin play at the OFSAA "AAA" girls Volleyball tournament in Stratford in first place with four wins and no losses. But, the 5th seeded Wildcats lost in 2 sets in the quarterfinals to Louis Riel.
Four North Bay Nordic Skiers took part in the Ontario Midge Championship recently. Madison Fraser with 3 girls from Thunder Bay won silver in the sprint relay A final, after a photo finish. Jack Bowness' team finished first in the B final.
9 Norsemen and Valkyries took part in the Ontario Winter Games on Friday in Gravenhurst, with four gold, four silver and a bronze medal won. Also of note, Courtney Simkins had the highest total in the female division, regardless of weight class. And Logan Baker had the highest total on the men's side, regardless of weight class.
The Nipissing Lakers are holding a hockey camp next Monday and Tuesday at Memorial Gardens. It's being put on by the coaching staff and players with the cost $45. The fun camp goes from 9am to 10:30 for players 8 and under and from 10:30 to noon for players ages 9 and up.
The NOJHL is out with its individual awards winners and 3 Trappers are being honoured. Mathew Pepin recieved the Gilles Laperriere Trophy for most improved player, Brodie Baron was named top defensive forward and given the Mitch Tetreault Memorial Trophy and defenceman Sacha Guimond was named to the NOJHL Second All Star Team.
Impressive results recently for North Bay Y Titan Alexandra Campbell at the Northeastern Regional Swim Meet in Elliot Lake. She took home a first, 2 second, a third and fourth place finishes while achieving personal best times. Two other Titans had top ten finishes and personal best times. Meantime, the Titans are congratulating Dominique Bouchard for being named co-winner of the 2009 local sports acheivement award for swimming medals at the International British Grand Prix.
A couple of Widdifield students competed in the slopestyle snowboarding event at the Ontario Winter Games recently and Tyler Nicholson won a bronze medal. Max Eberhart was 4th.

North Bay's Matt Marquardt is heading to Edmonton. The forward was traded from the Boston Bruins to the Oilers before the NHL trade deadline for Defenceman Cody Wild.
Canadore College has handed out it's annual awards. Lady Panthers Volleyball player Jordane Blanchette is the Athlete of the year while veteran hockey player Steve Walker is the Club player of the year. Meantime, the OCAA women's volleyball West Region Coach of the Year is Canadore's Joey Rainer.
The Nipissing Lakers men's volleyball season is over. They lost a close 3-2 decision to Redeemer in the bronze medal game at the OCAA Provincial Championship. Meantime, David Keo and Adam Leblanc were named OCAA west division first team all stars while Andre Leblanc was named to a second team all star.
The Nipissing Lady Lakers battled it out but lost in a fifth and deciding set of the OCAA Volleyball Championship final against Humber recently. Lady Lakers Stephanie Stubbert and Lindsay Carson were named tournament all stars. Earlier in the week, Stubbert and Chandra Massey were both named to the OCAA West Division first team all-stars.
North Bay's Steve Omischl finished 8th at the Olympic men's aerials event at Cypress Mountain. He scored 233.66 points in his two runs.
The Nipissing Lakers season has come to an end. Despite a strong team effort in game two including 41 saves from goalie Billy Stone, the Lakers dropped game two 7-2 to the McGill Redmen, sending the team back to Montreal with the series win.
North Bay's Mike O'Shea is back with the Toronto Argonauts -- as a coach. He'll serve as Toronto's special-teams coach. O'Shea spent 12 of his 16 years in the C-F-L with Toronto as the club's middle linebacker.
Plenty of hardward for the North Bay Nordic Junior Race Team recently at the last Ontario Cup race of the season in Onaping. Local cross country skiers won five gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
The North Bay Youth Volleyball club hosted 8 teams recently for the Under 13 Challenge Cup. And the host Blizzard team won bronze with 3-1 win over a York team.
The North Bay Baseball Association has a new executive. Chad Lacelle is the Association's President. Plans for the 2010 season are well underway with coaching and umpire clinics expected.
Former North Bay Trapper Claude Noel is the new interim head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets. This after Ken Hitchcock was fired. According to the Blue Jackets website, Noel led the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals to a Calder Cup in the 2003-2004 season -- winning coach of the year honours.
The West Ferris Ringette Association has it's logo for the 2010 Provincial A Championship. A Sudbury graphic artist won the logo competition. The design features black and green lettering along with a green ringette player skating out of the first zero in 2010.
