In NDA high school hockey Wednesday, Algonquin scored a 3-1 win over SJSH while West Ferris defeated Widdifield 7-4. In junior boys basketball, Franco Cite won 57-23 over Northern.
The St Joseph-Scollard Hall senior girls volleyball team is in Windsor for the All Catholic provincial championship. 42 teams are taking part -- with the Bears playing five games Thursday.
Figure skaters from North Bay, Mattawa, Sturgeon Falls, Astorville and Callander wil be in the Soo this weekend. They're taking part in the Festival of STARS Northern Ontario STARSkate Championships. The top three skaters in each event will make the Northern Ontario team and compete at a provincial event in Mississauga next month.
The CIS top 10 in men’s hockey includes the Nipissing Lakers. They’re ranked 10th in the country this week. The team has won ten of their last 11 regular season games, including the last 4 in a row. Nipissing is home to the University of Toronto on Saturday night at 7pm.
In OCAA volleyball, Nipissing took 3 of 4 games this past weekend. The Lady Lakers have won 12 straight and improved to 16-1 on the season after wins over Mohawk and Redeemer. They’re ranked 2nd provincially and 10th nationally. Meantime, the men are ranked 6th in Ontario. The 8-5 Lakers lost to Mohawk but swept Redeemer this past weekend.
JP Kascsak had 3 goals and 1 assists has the North Bay Junior A Trappers defeated the Sault Ste. Marie Eagles in Michigan, 7-2 on Saturday night. It was new head coach Dan West's first win. Meantime, the North Bay Junior A Trappers regular season will now end on home ice February 27th. That's when a recently postponed game against Sudbury has been rescheduled for. The team says tickets to the game January 21st will be valid for admission on the new night.
The regular season has come to a close for the Midget AAA Trappers. They lost 6-2 in Kirkland Lake Saturday night. North Bay''s 4th in the standings but could finish 5th. Kapuskasing is one point back but still has two games remaining.
Three North Bay Norsemen and Valkyries took part recently in the national junior weightlifting championships. Valkyrie Allison Loyst claimed silver in the 75 plus category while Mark Wang and Logan Baker earned 4th place finishes in their categories: Wang in the 69 kilo division and Baker in the 85. Former Valkyrie Stavrula Liritzis placed third and earned a bronze in the 71 kilo category. She now attends York University.

The West Ferris Senior Boys Basketball team is playing a number of exhibition games this weekend in Fredericton, New Brunswick. They're playing a few games against some of the top seeded teams in that province. The Trojans will also be watching some university basketball games, including former West Ferris standout Dustin Anthony, who plays for UNB.
A football combine is taking place in North Bay on Sunday at St Joseph-Scollard Hall. The event is for players in grade 8 through 12 and no equipment is needed although players should have shoes for indoor running. The cost is $30 when registering. University coaches from Ottawa, McMaster, Western and Guelph will be there.
Canadore's school of Recreation and Leisure is hosting a dodgeball tournament February 19th and they're looking for teams to enter. Right now they're looking for 8 high school and 8 post-secondary student teams but may open it up to others if they don't have enough people. The tourney is being themed after the movie Dodgeball, with creative uniforms, cheers and banners. There's also spirit points to be won.
Some changes involving the Temiscaming Royals NOJHL franchise. A new group is officially taking over operations of the franchise for the rest of the season and, for what they hope, many years.
5 local snowboarders competed in the first of 3 provincial series slopestyle events recently. Tyler Nicholson placed first in the 13 to 15 year old category while Max Eberhardt took top spot in the 16 and over division. Both walked away with the two highest overall scores in a field of 70 male riders along with cash prizes. They'll be preparing to head to the Burton Canadian Open next month in Calgary.
Several North Bay Nordic Ski Club Members took part in the Second Ontario Cup race in Thunder Bay recently. In juvenile girls, First year Madison Fraser won silver in the 5km skate race -- she was 0.4 seconds out of the gold medal spot. Meantime, in juvenile boys, 2nd year Liam Patterson won 2 bronze, 1 in the 1 km sprint and another in the 5 km skate race.
Kudos to the head coach of the North Bay Midget AAA Trappers. John Couch has been named head coach of the NOHA-Great North Midget League Team for the OHL Cup, which goes in March at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. The team features the top 15 year old players from around the league playing against a number of North American top draft prosperts.
The junior men's and women's provincial curling championship was held at the North Bay Granite Club recently. A Sudbury rink won on the women's side while and a rink from Thunder Bay won the men's title. The North Bay rink went 3 and 2 in round robin play and lost in a tiebreaker Sunday to a second Thunder Bay rink.
